BIFMA (Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association) , the association of American furniture manufacturers, assesses the environmental friendliness of furniture and the social sustainability of the production chain and of the producing company according to the following criteria:
Materials. The choice of materials is already taken into account in the company’s environment policy and incorporates sustainability aspects such as carbon neutrality, recyclability, recycled content, efficiency of material consumption and life cycle of the material.
Energy and atmosphere. The impact on the environment of processes and products is calculated by reference to energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and overall transport volume.
Health and ecosystem. All the supplied chemicals are compared with the standard. In addition, waste and emissions in air and water are balanced.
Social responsibility. Occupational health and safety and human rights, safety and health management and inclusion and municipal social commitment are assessed as aspects of corporate responsibility.
Product safety with the GS symbol. VS furniture carries the GS symbol, the official certificate of tested safety in accordance with German guidelines and directives.
