Empowering students through thoughtful spaces
Learning spaces have a long-term impact on students’ physical, mental, and social well-being. Thoughtfully designed environments provide emotional relief, foster a sense of belonging, and empower students with choice – creating environments where everyone can thrive.
Research shows that regular movement is essential for children's physical health and cognitive development. Psychologist Jean Piaget has shown that the sensorimotor skills of a child represent the foundation of their intellectual, social, and personal development. Without enough physical activity, students may struggle with posture, concentration, and even core academic skills like reading and math.
Even small movements – like fidgeting – support cognitive function, improve focus, and boost learning outcomes. Learning spaces should encourage natural mobility, allowing students to sit, stand, and move throughout the day to support their well-being.
At VS, we design products that encourage movement, helping to create dynamic learning spaces where mobility is seamlessly integrated into instruction. Our furniture supports engagement, focus, and a sense of well-being, ensuring students can thrive both academically and physically.
Let’s Create Learning Spaces That Embody Dynamic Flexibility, Healthy Ergonomics, and Compassion Our Kids Deserve It
A safe environment and trust empower students to collaborate and communicate while fostering critical thinking. By encouraging rather than restricting natural movement, ergonomic school furniture supports student agency and allows students to engage creatively and independently. This sense of empowerment leads to higher engagement and performance in class.
Active learning spaces create opportunities for collaboration among students. In sharp contrast to traditional seating arrangements, which keep individuals still and facing forward – restricted in both motion and focus – contemporary furniture options like PantoSwing cantilever chairs and Hokki wobble stools allow students to interact more organically with one another. By allowing greater flexibility and mobility, these designs help break down hierarchies created by rigid seating arrangements.
Above all, active classroom furniture empowers students to engage more freely with one another, shaping the culture of their classroom while fostering equity of opportunity. When students can sit, stand, or learn in the way that best supports their needs, they are better equipped to thrive – from pre-K through high school and beyond.
In addition to areas that foster movement, schools should also have nooks and corners that children can seek out themselves when they need quiet time.
Students are constantly switching between being tense and relaxed throughout the school day. To thrive in these opposing states of being, students need appropriate spaces in equal measure. Spaces or zones that invite students to relax and recharge should not only have appropriate furnishings but also the right lighting and colors to create a sense of well-being.
It makes sense to locate quiet zones along lesser-used corridors to actively promote relaxation. A table facing the wall or located behind a mobile partition and quiet corners also provide the right working atmosphere for easily distracted children. In contrast, the area in the middle of the classroom offers more active space to move around.
